Oscars Predictions 2023.

For the 2023 Academy Awards, we polled the writers of thefilmpupil magazine to get their predictions for each category - as well as any suggestions for films that were wrongly overlooked...

Best Picture Prediction

Everything, Everywhere, All At Once (Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, 2022) was top pick for the highly-esteemed Best Picture from the writers - followed closely by several votes forThe Banshees for Inisherin.

A variety of films were idendified as being unfairly excluded from the title of Best Picture, including: Nope, X, Bones and All, Aftersun , Till, and Pear.

Best Actor Prediction

Leading Actor

Brendan Fraser in The Wale (Darren Aronofsky, 2023) recieved a majority of the predictions for this award, with roughly 60% of the writers voting for his return from The Mummy Returns and Bedazzledglory.

Adam Driver for White Noise, Robert Pattinson for The Batman, and Timothée Chalamet for Bones and All were also said to be deserving of the title.

Supporting Actor

Ke Huy Quan had a similar celebration in our poll for his work in Everything, Everywhere, All at Once - followed closely by Barry Keoghan in The Banshees of Inisherin.

Nope had another mention for stolen awards, with Steven Yeun’s portrayal voted for by multiple writers. Katerina offered up the nomination of Rory Kinnear, adding that ‘Men was shit but he was good’ and Chloe noted the pitfalls in the selection with a note ‘I have no idea who half these nominations are’.

Best Actress Prediction

Leading Actress

Cate Blanchett in Tár(Todd Field, 2023) saw the biggest sweep for the votes, with the approvial of more than 70% of the writers. The other 30% chose Michelle Yeoh for her role in Everything, Everywhere, All At Once as a contender.

For excluded leading acresses Mia Goth recieved three mentions, for her role in both X and Pearl. Frankie Corio also recieved multiple votes for her role in Aftersun.

Supporting Actress

Angela Bassett was our chosen nominee for Supporting Actress for her role in the well-recieved sequel Black Panther: Wakander Forever(Ryan Coogler, 2022).

Frankie Corio recieved another mention, showing how it is difficult to define an actress or actor as ‘supporting’. Jenna Ortega for Scream - as well as Charlbi Dean and Dolly De Leon both for Triangle of Sadness were also mentioned

Cinematography Prediction

For Best Cinematography, a tie occured between All Quiet on the Western Front (James Friend, 2022) and Elvis (Mandy Walker, 2022).

However, the responses for possible nominations were more varied - with suggestions of Nope, The Batman, Aftersun, and Bones and All.

Directing Prediction

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert were recognised for their directorial efforts on Everything, Everywhere, All at Once - gaining the same number of votes as Steven Spielberg, Todd Field, and Martin McDonagh combined.

Charlotte Wells recieved two mentions, with her directorial debut of Aftersun. Zach Creeger was also voted for Barbarian, as well as Ti West for Pearl, and Luca Guadagnino for Bones and All.

Editing Prediction

Another tie occured between the editing skill of Everything, Everywhere, All at Once(Paul Rogers) and Elvis (Matt Villa and Jonathan Redmond) - with a vote for Top Gun: Maverick (Eddie Hamilton) also present.

Other ideas for well edited films not included were Avatar: The Way of Water, Puss In Boots, and The House.

Sound Prediction

Elvis( Baz Luhrmann,2022) recieved its first solo prediction for sound, winning against three other very loud films that recieved one vote each: The Batman, Top Gun, and Ironically All Quiet on The Western Front.

Less films were seen as being left out for sound, with brief mentions of Barbarian, Aftersun, and Puss in Boots.

Writing Prediction

The Banshees of Inisherin(Martin McDonagh,2022), writted by Martin McDonagh, was predicted to win for best original screenplay - wilst Living(Oliver Hermanus, 2022) by Kazuo Inishguro swept the adapted screenplay catagory with about 85% of the vote.

Nope, X, Pearl, Aftersun were all also celebrated and thought of as deserving the win.

International Feature Prediction

All Quiet on The Western Front(Edward Berger, 2022) was predicted to win best International Feature by our writers, with The Quiet Girl from Ireland and EO from Poland also recieving votes.

The suggestions for other International Features that should have made the cut was almost unanimous, with the writers suggesting:

and “Babysitter”

Animated Feature Prediction

Our Final Poll was for Best Animated Feature, which was given to Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinnochio ( Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson, 2023) with contestion from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and Turning Red.

Other reccomendations included animation anthology film The House, as well as Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and further emphasis on Puss in Boots
